One of the beautiful phenomena of the world is how living things naturally grow stronger, more capable, and fruitful when given the conditions they need. This is something I love about therapy. We get to create an environment together that lets each part of you evolve in its desired direction. Simply bringing gentleness, curiosity, understanding, and care to the places and patterns in your mind that feel stuck, hurt, ashamed, afraid, or immature, we can create the space and conditions needed for their growth and healing.

This is the essence of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, one of the primary therapy modalities I use. I find it a great foundational structure for therapy work. It gives both direction and flexibility for catering the process to each person and part’s unique needs and preferences.

Many other therapeutic tools can add wonderfully to the IFS process, such as meditation, acupressure tapping, guided imagery, and spiritual practices like prayer or communication with guides or divine power. I am familiar with a range of spiritual traditions, and I love to encourage clients to incorporate whatever kind of spirituality is authentic to them.

One of my favorite therapeutic tools to enhance the work is Clinical Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), also known as “tapping.” This is a type of energy medicine rooted in traditional Chinese medicine. While its mechanisms are not fully elucidated through empirical study, there is bountiful empirical evidence of its effectiveness for emotional regulation, healing, and treatment of mental disorders including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. I enjoy using tapping on its own as well as in conjunction with IFS.

It’s important for the approach of therapy to be tailored to each client and for the process to be an empowering one. For this reason, I like therapy to feel like teamwork, where we collaborate as equals, each bringing our respective expertise, ideas, and experience to support the process.
